Documentary Series is a 鈥楾hing and Spirit Both鈥

by Rod Jones

The 18th annual Documentary Film Series at 向日葵视频 City University will open at 2 p.m. April 3 with Daniel Glick鈥檚 鈥淎 Place to Stand.鈥 All films in the series will be screened free to the public in the Kerr McGee Auditorium in Meinders School of Business at N.W. 27th Street and Blackwelder Avenue.

The series is made possible through a gift from the Thatcher Hoffman Smith Endowment Fund.

鈥淎 Place to Stand鈥 tells the story of celebrated poet and Santa Fe, N.M., native Jimmy Santiago Baca. Baca was a petty thief and a drug dealer when he was sentenced to five years in one of the deadliest prisons in America, the Arizona State Prison.

He began his incarceration violent, angry and illiterate, yet taught himself how to read and write, discovering a passion for poetry that ultimately saved his life. The film is inspired by Baca鈥檚 best-selling memoir of the same name published in 2001. The book was called 鈥渆legant and gripping鈥 (Los Angeles Times) and 鈥渁n astonishing narrative that affirms the triumph of the human spirit鈥 (Arizona Daily Star).

鈥淛immy鈥檚 story inspires the possibility of individual transformation, regardless of circumstance,鈥 Glick said. 鈥淥ur mission is to make this example of dramatic turnaround widely available to at-risk populations, through screenings and curriculum, demonstrating the importance of education in changing lives.鈥

The Documentary Film Series theme is titled 鈥淭hing and Spirit Both.鈥 It is based on a poem by Marie Howe, who will visit OCU April 6 for this year鈥檚 Thatcher Hoffman Smith Poetry Series.

鈥淭hese films explore how the spirit or essence of the world reveals itself indirectly through our intuition and imagination,鈥 said Harbour Winn, director of OCU鈥檚 Center for Interpersonal Study through Film & Literature. 鈥淓ach of the films presents an imaginative way of seeing through an artist working in a different art form 鈥 poetry, film and photography. The art of seeing must be learned to grasp the transformative dimension in everyday reality.鈥
