Film still from "The Salesman"

向日葵视频 City University鈥檚 annual international film series will continue at 2 p.m. Feb. 18 with the Oscar-winning drama 鈥淭he Salesman.鈥 The screening is free to the public in the Kerr McGee Auditorium in鈥疢einders School of Business at N.W. 27th Street and McKinley Avenue.

A heart-pounding drama from Asghar Farhadi 鈥 the director of 鈥淎 Separation鈥 and 鈥淔ireworks Wednesday鈥 鈥 鈥淭he Salesman鈥 introduces Emad and Rana, two married actors performing in Arthur Miller鈥檚 鈥淒eath of a Salesman.鈥 Life is looking good for the couple professionally, but their home life is disrupted when Rana is assaulted while alone in their new apartment. The two are forced on an emotional journey that threatens their careers, marriage and moral center.

With engaging lead performances and a sharp screenplay, the film offers a complex portrait of the desire for revenge, leading to what is considered one of the most suspenseful and thought-provoking climaxes in cinematic history. The most requested film on last year鈥檚 evaluation form, 鈥淭he Salesman鈥 won the 2017 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film and marks Farhadi鈥檚 fifth picture shown by the Film Institute.鈥

OCU series director Tracy Floreani said she and her advisory committee wanted this year鈥檚 film series to take on a positive theme in light of the many global crises and cultural divides occurring in recent times.

鈥淎ll of these films deal with the idea of reconciliation in some way, whether people from warring factions trying to understand one another, or people treading the difficult terrain of forgiveness or acceptance,鈥 Floreani said.

Films are also selected based on feedback and requests from regular audience members at the series.

A discussion session follows each film for those who wish to stay, and a list of theme-based recommended readings and podcasts will be available at each screening.

Other upcoming films in the series include:

路 March 4, 鈥淏oy鈥 by Taika Waititi (New Zealand, 2010)

路 March 18, 鈥淭he Diving Bell and the Butterfly鈥 by Julian Schnabel (France/USA, 2007)
