Biology

The minor in biology offers students a coherent program of study and training in the biological sciences. It provides exposure to the fundamental principles of biology, including studies of the structure, organization and diversity of life. The minor is well-suited for students who wish to pursue a career that requires an understanding and appreciation of the life sciences. Students from the following majors may not elect a minor in biology, cellular and molecular biology, and biomedical science.

How do I declare a minor in biology?

Students interested in any major or minor in the biological sciences are encouraged to meet with an advisor to discuss their academic plans as soon as possible! You have to declare your minor in order for it to show up on your transcript. Merely taking the required classes is not enough. You need to fill out the 鈥淐hange in Academic Status鈥 form, signed by the chair of the Biology Department.

Students are required to complete 20 credit hours, which includes:

  • Fundamentals of Biology (BIOL 1214)
  • 8 hours of 2000-level BIOL courses
  • 8 hours of additional classes from 3000- and/or 4000-level BIOL courses

Note: Either BIOL 3114 General Microbiology or BIOL 2314 Introductory Microbiology may be counted towards a minor, but not both. Either BIOL 3103 Introductory Biochemistry or BIOL 3714 Biochemistry I may be counted towards a minor, but not both.
